There was never a shortage of laughter throughout my shifts and if you're willing to find the joy in your work, you're guaranteed to find it with FCS.

"I was a Direct Support Professional in 2015-2017. At the time, I was a college student at St. Ambrose University working towards my Psychology degree in hopes to get into grad school to become an Occupational therapist. I was able to get my Doctorate of Occupational Therapy degree and I just graduated in May of 2020, many thanks to the experience I had working at FCS. I currently am employed with a school district within the Quad Cities area as an Occupational therapist working with students. FCS truly guided me into a successful future with my dream profession by opening my eyes to so many different and amazing people I was able to work with. I was able to expand my knowledge in a variety of diagnoses, medications, precautions, and so much more. I will admit, there were plenty of times where I felt that I wasn’t going to be able to handle a certain situation or a certain client’s needs, but the staff at FCS always prepared me and was there to answer any questions at any time. One of my greatest memories from working at FCS was within my first month of working there, we took a group trip with a handful of our clients and our support staff and did an overnight at an adventure course. Our clients were able to participate in the adventure course and all of them felt so strong and courageous through it all! It was such a cool experience to get to see the true abilities of all of our clients! I will never forget the clients I had the privilege to get to know and the families who welcomed me into their homes with open arms. The FCS family is one of the best!"

When were you employed by Family Care Solutions?

    July 2017-October 2019

Were you a student pursing your Degree?

At the end, yes! I started a Master’s program in August of 2019.

    What degree did you obtain?

I am 6 weeks out from my Master’s of Science in Nursing-Family Nurse Practitioner.

Where is your current place of employment?

    Genesis Convenient Care

What piece of advice would you have for current Family Care Solutions Staff?

Enjoy it! The patients are the absolute best and they and their families appreciate you so much.  Some days it can be really hard but at the end of the day you are making a positive impact on a human life and that’s something to smile about.

How did your employment at FCS aid in the path that you chose following graduation?

FCS showed me a side to health care that I had no idea was so beneficial. Home Health Care is such a blessing to families and to patients and that influences my decision making daily when I’m thinking about my patients.  I hope to be able to positively affect my patients as a NP by utilizing home health for them when necessary.  Home Health Care is such an underutilized resource and it can be so helpful to patients!

What is your most fond memory of working at FCS?

Working in the office and in the field, every day was a hoot because of the family-like atmosphere, but I’d have to say my favorite memory was when we got to accompany some of our patients to Night to Shine.  It was so fun to see everyone dressed up and having such a blast.

What would you say were your greatest accomplishments during your time at Family Care Solutions?

My greatest accomplishment was probably increasing our newborn case load, which I think was so helpful for parents.  After a NICU stay, parents are understandably nervous about baby’s weight and care, so having a nurse come in for weight checks and education is just a comfort to families.  I remember wishing at the start of the pandemic that I could still provide this service to keep families out of the doctor’s offices!

If you can recall, why did you choose to work at Family Care Solutions?

I actually found FCS on accident through a job posting after my husband and I adopted our son. I had another interview in the same week and received job offers from both, but chose FCS because of the atmosphere.  I remember interviewing with Joanie and being so nervous because I had no experience with special needs patients, and she said something like “the fact that you’re nervous about it makes me think you’ll do a great job”, and that made all the difference to me.  I truly felt from the beginning that everyone treated every patient with respect, kindness, and like they would treat their own family, and I wanted to be a part of that.

What was one way you felt you grew as a person and/or caregiver by working at Family Care Solutions?

I definitely gained a sense of humility working with our patients.  They are truly the best patients in the world and showed me how precious life is and how joy-filled we should all be. Regardless of what kind of a day I was having, I could walk into a certain patient’s house and they would force me to sing songs from High School Musical or Grease and my day was instantly made.  I think this job made me more kind and compassionate, and it will make me a better provider.
